Ergonomic line balancing
Ergonomic Balancing is a concept developed with stakeholders from the academic world, the industry and the AVIX software team.
Traditionally line balancing is focused on distributing the workload (assembly time) equally between the resources. At a later stage, if at all, the ergonomic strains for the humans is considered. It doesn´t have to be that way!
Ergonomic balancing is a critical aspect of workplace safety and health. It involves the careful consideration of the human body's capabilities and limitations, as well as the specific tasks that workers are required to perform. By designing products and workstations that are ergonomically balanced, organisations can reduce the risk of disorders, repetitive strain injuries, and other health problems that can result from prolonged or repetitive use of poorly designed equipment or workstations.
Using AVIX Ergo Balancing both assembly time and the ergonomic strain are considered in parallel and are equally important.
Areas of applications
- Optimize the assembly line from a human well being perspective
- Identify line positions that are demanding from an ergonomic point of view
- Identify product variants that are heavy for the human to assemble
- Eliminate poor ergonomic situations
- Optimize work rotation to prevent musculoskeletal problems
- Balance the line based on time and ergonomy

Balancing by drag’n drop gives the user the possibility to follow the line balancing improvements when moving around work tasks. The assembly time and the ergonomic strain are both visualized in the chart. Colors and bars will clearly show when assembly time exceeds the takt time and when the ergonomic strain is higher than what is allowed. This gives the production engineer great possibilities to find the best solution to the line balance problem.
